Age Related Changes in the Purkinje Cells in Human Cerebellar Cortex
نویسندگان
چکیده
The human cerebellum is associated with smooth control of movements and memory. As age advances deterioration is noticed in the cerebellum. The Purkinje cells act as the pivot in the neuronal circuitry of the cerebellum, which initiates and maintains complex, but smooth pursuit movements and it can be identified as one of the factors which cause the decline in movement and memory in humans as age progresses. In the present study a quantitative analysis of the Purkinje cells of the human cerebellum was done using light microscopy in seventy human cerebellums. The tissue collected from post mortem specimen was subject to routine histological processing and the slides studied under light microscopy to assess the diameter and linear density of Purkinje cells. The results of the study showed that the Purkinje cells are seen as a linear interface at the junction of the molecular and granular layer. The number of Purkinje cells was observed to be more at the crests than at the troughs of each folia. The Purkinje cells showed a statistically significant decrease in number after the third decade with ballooning observed around the sixth decade. The study aims to provide information regarding quantitative changes of the Purkinje cells of the human cerebellar cortex so as to enable clinical correlation with age related cerebellar dysfunction.

متن کاملStereological Estimation of Granule Cell Number and Purkinje Cell Volume in the Cerebellum of Noise-Exposed Young Rat
In spite of the existing reports on behavioural and biochemical changes related to the cerebellum due to noise stress, not much is known about the effect of noise stress on the neuronal changes in the cerebellum. The present study aims at investigating the effects from one week noise exposure on granule cell number and Purkinje cell volume within the neonate rat cerebellum.15-day-old male Wista...

Background: Seizure is a chronic neurological disease that may have non-neurological origins such as astrocytes and microglia. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of alone and co-administration of cabergoline and levetiracetam on the histological and stereological structure of the cerebral cortex, hippocampus and cerebellum following chronic seizures in rat. Methods...

متن کاملCalbindin positive Purkinje cells in the pathology of human cerebellum occurring at the time of its development.
Development of cerebellum continues over an extremely long period of time extending from the early embryonic phase until the first postnatal years. During an extended time of maturation the cerebellum is vulnerable to harmful agents. A group of cytoplasmic proteins that may protect cells against injury are the calcium binding proteins, among others calbindin. The distribution of this protein is...
